She is a teacher consultant with Sun Belt, a site of the National Writing Project. She devotes much of her time to her students and the Tuskegee Gospel Ensemble, a ministry at Tuskegee University. Burks, who lives in Opelika, Alabama, graduated summa cum laude from Tuskegee University with a degree in Language Arts Secondary Education and received a masters degree in English Education from Auburn University.
